In 2014 Bumkey’s star was on the rise. The South Korean R&B crooner had released a over year’s worth of high-charting -and sometimes chart-topping- singles and was collaborating on tracks with some of the hottest names in both K-pop and K-hip hop, from Gain, Infinite H and Mamamoo, to Verbal Jint, MC Mong, and Dynamic Duo; he had even taken home the 2013 HipHopPlaya R&B Artist of the Year award.
Beyond that, Bumkey debuted formally as the leader of Brand New Music’s new hip hop group TROY in February, and was part of the Asian Music Festival: Hip Hop Series that rocked several major cities in the U.S. and Australia in May. His personal life was soaring as well – he married his lady love, fellow musician DJ Da Hye, in June that year and the special single he released in her honor sailed to the top of the charts.
But by the end of the year, all became uncertain. In early December 2014 news broke that Bumkey had become embroiled in an illegal drug scandal and a trial was already underway. All music activities ground to a halt and fans were left worried and wondering what would become of this sweet, soulful singer.
Finally, April 2015 it was announced that the Bumkey had been declared innocent. And now, only a few months later, he’s back with a brand new single! Check it out:
If this song doesn’t pull on your heartstrings enough as it is, consider that it was co-written and co-produced with his wife.
So great to see this young married couple putting hardship behind them and getting back to making music. It’s also great to see that Brand New Music is a record that stands by its artists.
Someone pass me the tissues – I’m a little verklempt.
