Katy Perry went all out for this lyric video by casting Gretchen as the lead. But boy does it work!
Born Maria Odete Brito de Miranda, Gretchen is a Brazilian singer, reality television personality, actress, and businesswoman. Her popularity was achieved by the movie Aleluia, Gretchen, that tells the story of a German Brazilian immigrant family. Gretchen is known for reinventing her music and representation, and for maintaining her autonomy within the recording industry. Referred to as the Rainha do Bumbum (“Queen of Butt”), Gretchen is often cited as an influence by other artists.
She seems to be an inspiration to Perry as well, since she’s in the video. It’s all fun and partying for the Brazilian star and the dancers around her seem to be loving her vibe. The lyrics are at the bottom of the screen, sing-a-long style with a basketball fittingly jumping over the words. The video also features Gretchen heavily, with close ups and individual shots of her.
The song, however, is not as light as it’s made to sound. Perry, with the help of Minaj, seem to be talking about haters and how they both singers are too well-off to be phased. While Perry might be directing her lyrics to someone specific, Minaj is here to back her up.
Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson is an American singer and songwriter. After singing in church during her childhood, she pursued a career in gospel music signing with Red Hill Records and releasing her debut studio album, Katy Hudson, in 2001. It was commercially unsuccessful. She moved to Los Angeles the following year to venture into secular music after Red Hill ceased operations and she subsequently began working with producers Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin. She signed a recording contract with Capitol Records in April 2007.
