KCON 2016 France, the first ever KCON event to take place in France and the whole of Europe, was held last week June 2, at the Accors Hotel in Paris. Super Junior’s Leeteuk was the host and special MC for the event. KCON is the world’s largest festival and convention celebrating Korean music and culture. All 12,000 tickets for the event sold out within 4 hours, showing the demand and growth in popularity of Korean media in Europe and France in particular.
The boy groups who performed at KCON’s first stop in France and Europe were FTISLAND from FNC Entertainment, SHINee from SM Entertainment, Block B from Seven Seasons, and BTS from Big Hit Entertainment. The two girl groups who met and performed for fans at the event were SM’s Asia pop dance group f(x) and the collective girl group I.O.I., formed by the finalists of Mnet’s idol reality show Produce 101 and currently signed under YMC Entertainment. Actor Jin Goo and actress Han Ji Min also made special appearances.
KCON in France was also I.O.I.’s first concert outside of Korea. Block B’s Taeil and f(x) Luna notably performed a duet version of Zico’s original song “It Was Love”. The next KCON events for the year will both be taking place this summer: KCON 2016 New York will be held around two weeks from now, from June 24 to 25 at the Prudential Center in New Jersey, while KCON 2016 Los Angeles will take place close to the end of next month, from July 29 to 31 at the Staples Center and Los Angeles Convention Center.
