Ever since we first got introduced to the adorable and delightful Kim So-Eun in the character of Chu Ga-Eul in “Boys Over Flowers”, we’ve fallen in love with her perennial baby-face and child-like smile that brightens up any room or space. Ms. Kim was recently featured on the cover of K-Wave magazine, and we couldn’t help but take a trip down memory lane and take another look at the plucky Ga-Eul.
She may have been honest to a fault, a little clumsy, unvarnished, and vulnerable, but that didn’t stop Ga-Eul. Instead, those very traits were what made her strong, focused and determined. Remember when she asked Kim Bum’s character, Yi-Jung, out on a date… and she confessed her feelings for him!? Yeah she was naive, but fearless, and not afraid to be hurt.
Kim So-Eun’s character displayed that quiet determination that sees the possible against all odds. It’s those people who succeed in life, against impossible obstacles. Even more so than the main actors, Geum Jan Di and Gu Jun Pyo, Ga-Eul was the only character who really got everything she wanted. (We will never know – hopefully, if Jan-Di married Jun-Pyo.)
With all the focus on Geum JanDi and Gu-JunPyo, it’s easy to miss that her character had a lot of depth.
Here’s what Yi-Jung said of Ga-Eul towards the end of the series.
“… I’m going to keep doing it. I’m not going to avoid it anymore. Once one gives up, how much one regrets it….because of someone I came to know this well.
There’s many things we can learn from Ga-Eul that we can implement in our daily lives. Ga-Eul once said to Yi-Jung… “thank you for giving me the opportunity to do my best.”
… to do my best.” We too, should in all things… do our best. Not give up, and make sure regardless of the outcome “…we have no regrets or lingering feelings” as Ga-Eul said. Wise-words from a plucky, clumsy, innocent, child-like K-drama character.
It’s all these traits that makes Kim so-Eun as Ga-Eul forever in our K-drama and Hallyu hall of fame.
