Dark Makeover for The Familiar’s “World Ends”
The alternative electropop group, The Familiar recently premiered the video of their single “World Ends”, which “sees their razor-sharp pop escapade given a dark makeover.”
The Familiar are a duo made of Ruth Mirsky and Mads Martinsen, who created these intimate and lush soundscapes paired with pop hooks without Mirsky and Martinsen ever working together in the same room.
Ruth is a Norwegian-American based in Brooklyn, NY, while Mads lives in Norway. They describe the group as a conjuring of strangers — polar opposites who find inspiration in the uncanny darkness of winters with no sun, the unyielding lightness of summers with no night, and a city that never sleeps. They released their debut EP Rooms in May 2014.
Syvia’s “Soon” Creates Euphoria
Indie rock group Syvia, recently premiered their new single “Soon” and sent listeners “into states of instant euphoria.”
Blurring the lines between electropop, punk, and rock by pairing gritty rock riffs with lush electronic synths and memorable shoegaze hooks, Syvia pairs the grittiness of The YYYs with a dark Nordic spirit. The band has performed at venues throughout New York, including Brooklyn Night Bazaar, the Northside Festival, Webster Hall Studio, and more. Their “Two Homes” video premiered on The Wild Honey Pie, and was called “perfect for blasting in your earphones”. They will be releasing their debut full-length album entitled FWD in early 2015.
New The Kickdrums Single / 24west Records!
One recent morning, The Kickdrums released a brand new track “Breathe Again,” via 24west Records! The track is the first ‘official’ independent release from Alex (The Kickdrums) in over half a decade and, on a side note, it will be the first release form the new 24west 7″ boutique vinyl single imprint, starting at the top of 2015!
A little bit about the track…it really digs back into the roots Alex developed in indie rock before he came to be known more for his hip hop production. While at it’s core, the track is rock oriented, The Kickdrums’ signature use of meticulously layered synth and masterfully posited drum machine tracks are very much present. The result is a beautiful track that fuses an ethereal soundscape with pulsing drums and a huge hook.
Wonderful Humans Completely Reimagine “Shake It Off”
For their new single, the latest from electropop duo Wonderful Humans, they re-imagined Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” in a way that Earbuddy described as “taking “Shake It Off” into a darker territory that’s entirely their own and would almost be unrecognizable if not for the unmistakable hook.”
Brian Cag and Amanda Carl saw more in each other more than just a significant other, and created Wonderful Humans. The duo’s infectious melodies and sounds emulate that first heart’s flutter, when real love is present. Their first single, “Edge of the Night”, was remixed by Mad Decent producer Daktyl and currently has over 250k plays on SoundCloud. Their second single “Worth Your While” premiered on The Burning Ear, and received pickup on Kick Kick Snare, KX93.5 in Laguna, and more. The group made their live debut at CMJ this year.
