It was a night for some of the best hip-hop out of South Korea, at the B.B. King’s concert venue in Times Square, NYC. That was until an international incident at the State Department had the quick thinking team at AMF, rebrand the performance as “Show Me The Winner,” a play on the popular Korean hip-hop show “Show Me The Money.” Enter Izzyman: the winner in 2013 of the annual talent platform Kollaboration NYC, and a headliner of the showcase in 2014. Kollaboration NYC 2014 will be held on August 30, 2014 at The Skirball Theater in NYU.
“Potential plus opportunity equals success.” That’s Izzyman, or Izzy for short, talking to us just before he had the crowd waving and cheering during his performance at “Show Me the Winner”. Although he had only one night’s notice to prepare, that didn’t stop him from whipping together a beat just for the show. When the opportunity suddenly came up, as far as Izzy was concerned he has the potential. So he made the decision to find success at the AMF event. It’s the same sentiment that led him to winning at Kollaboration in 2013.
“Learn to run this life or this life will run you.” Izzy again. This time on stage, expressing an attitude that has served him well, from his early days growing up in Flushing, Queens, to joining the step team at Brooklyn Tech, then unto college were he honed his skills as a rapper and producer. And then again in 2011, when he sat in the audience at Kollaboration NYC, and realizing “I can do this.” Izzy attended Kollaboration NYC in 2011 for only one reason; to see the renowned rapper, Dumbfounded perform.
Kollaboration, which seeks to increase the visibility of Asian Americans in mainstream media, has birthed and groomed notable artists such as Clara C. It isn’t a run of the mill talent show that looks for the best performer and moves on to the next. Beyond that, it’s a network that spans 14 U.S. cities, as well as a support system that winning artists, who notably are called alumni, can tap into as they develop their careers. When Clara C last came to New York City to perform, handling the logistics of the concert such as the merch table and helping with her gear were Kollaboration volunteer staff.
“Everything you saw last year, was baby’s play. We’re taking it a step up”. Izzy once more, telling us about his upcoming performance at Kollaboration NYC 2014. After performing alongside none other than Dumbfounded at the Macdonald B-Boy Royale held at NYU Skirball Theater on August 16th, 2014, Izzy will continue the streak on the exact same stage just two weeks after, at Kollaboration NYC 2014. And as a headlining artist, this time his face is on the poster. Who knows, maybe some kid in the audience will be inspired as well, and follow in the footsteps of Izzy, who followed Dumfounded and the example of Clara C.
