As David Letterman continues his daily match to retirement on May 20, 2015 from “The Late Show With David Letterman” on CBS after 33 years as its host, he once again brought out another remarkable artist to send him off, John Mellencamp.

The rock singer-songwriter offered David Letterman the same advice his grandmother, who lived to be 100, gave to him on her death bed “life is short even in its longest days.” John then sang a slow and soft song with the advice in the chorus. The song called “Longest Days,” is the opening track from the veteran rocker’s 2008 album Life, Death, Love and Freedom.

John Mellencamp recently performed at the Apollo Theater on April 23rd, 2015, which according to Billboard was a “triumphant, career-spanning show.”

On April 16, David Letterman managed to pull Tracy Chapman out of retirement to perform “Stand By Me.”
